There are lots of reasons a clean house is important to me, but the biggest is probably simply that my brain works better when my house is clean. Over the years I’ve had lots of people ask how I keep things tidy most of the time.
So–at the risk of having you all think I am completely crazy–I thought today I’d share my little “speed cleaning” routine. I probably spend, on average, about 45 minutes to an hour each morning making my house sparkle. This means I spend about 5-7 hours a week cleaning.
That is still a significant amount of time!

However, to me it is well worth spending 5-7 hours a week cleaning in order to have a house that is pretty darn neat & tidy most of the time. The trick is staying on top of it.
I am a list kind-of girl, so I actually have a daily checklist that I use each day.
It is located on my “control center” wall where I have a dry-erase monthly calendar and where there is also a spot for a weekly meal plan and important phone numbers.
Since it is all in one place, I can easily check the calendar for any pressing activities or appointments. This helps me prioritize my cleaning activities and to cut things out or add things as necessary.
My “Control Center:”
I don’t use a wide variety of cleaning supplies, and I have never been that picky about brands.
I used to use a lot of commercial products, including the disposable wipes, but I have slowly transitioned to using mainly these homemade green & thrifty cleaning products.
They are cheaper, they smell better, and require me to keep far fewer bottles of stuff lying around! The two commercial items I do use frequently are my Swiffer Wet Jet and my Swiffer dusters. What a great invention! It makes mopping so much faster & easier.
Here is my system:
- Start at one end of the house. (I start in our Master Bedroom and work my way through the living room and kitchen to the girls’ room and bathroom.)
- Cleaning is much easier when everything has a home. Work on creating organized storage for all of the things that end up being scattered around the house, papers, mail, shoes, & toys.
- Use a large laundry basket to collect items such as toys or clothing that need to be returned to a different room. If you have multiple offenders, use multiple baskets. After you have finished tidying every room, take 5 minutes to put away the collected items.
- Save sweeping/mopping and vacuuming until the end, then do it all at once. We have mostly hard surface floors, so I use an industrial dry mop to wipe the floors each day. It takes only a couple minutes to run it over all the floors and then shake it off outside. About once a week, I do a really thorough sweep and then use a Swiffer WetJet to mop. I vacuum the rugs about 3 times a week.
- wise, save the glass cleaning for the end as well. Once the house is completely clean, I will grab my windex and rag and run around doing spot checks on the glass doors and windows. I wipe the bathroom mirrors as well as the fixtures and sink.
- Keep daily shower cleaner in the bath/shower and spray down after each use.
- Store your toilet brush in a container of bleach; replace the bleach once a week.
Bedroom(s) (5-10 minutes each, depending on how much to pick up):
- Always make the bed. Even if there are other things laying around, the room will look much, much cleaner.
- Quickly pick up any clothes, toys, or dishes that are lying around.
- Use a duster or dry rag to quickly dust all surfaces, including the headboard and footboard.
Bathroom(s) (5 minutes each):
- Squirt toilet bowl cleaner around the rim; let sit.
- Use disinfectant wipes or a wet rag and disinfectant spray to quickly wipe down the sinks, tub, and shower.
- Use toilet brush to quickly scrub toilet, rim, and seat.
- Use disinfectant wipes or a wet rag and disinfectant spray to wipe down toilet seat & surrounding floor.
Living Room/Dining/Home Office Areas (10-15 minutes):
- Quickly pick up any shoes, dishes, toys, or other items laying around. (Put them in basket to put away later.)
- Use duster to quickly dust all surfaces.
- Use damp cloth to wipe down furniture (if leather), table(s), and dining chairs.
- Tidy desk area and make sure all paperwork & mail is filed & sorted in its proper spots.
Kitchen (10-15 minutes, depending on how many dishes):
- Quickly pick up any items that don’t belong in kitchen and place them in basket(s). Gather any dirty dishes and put them next to sink.
- Quickly unload (if necessary) then load diswasher.
- Hand wash dishes/pots/pans as needed
- Spray all counters with disinfectant spray, then use soapy water and wet sponge to wipe them all down.
- Wipe down stovetop.
- Dry and put away any hand-washed dishes, then drain and rinse sink–the secret to a truly clean-looking kitchen is clutter-free counters and a nice clean sink.
- Use a dry mop to clean hard floors. Spot clean with a sponge if necessary.
- Vacuum rugs/carpet.
- Clean glass surfaces & mirrors as needed with glass cleaner and a lint-free rag. Don’t forget to spray & wipe the bathroom fixtures for extra shine!
- Put away items collected in baskets while cleaning.
It may take a little getting used to, but once you are in the habit of speed cleaning each morning, you will be done in no time and free to enjoy a clean house for the rest of the day!

2) If You Get Something Out, Put It Away
Sounds so easy, doesn’t it? When you get something out, put it back in its place.
However, as most of us can attest to, this doesn’t always happen. And, while it may take some time getting used to, by enforcing this rule with yourself and your family members, you’ll enjoy a much cleaner house.
Think about it this way: Be consistent about putting things away in the moment, and you won’t have to waste large chunks of time cleaning!
3) Don’t Let the Mail Pile Up
Eek, we’re all guilty of this one! It may seem simpler to just let the mail pile up and then deal with it later, but you’ll just end up spending way more time than necessary sorting through it all. Instead, figure out a mail/paperwork system that works for you and your family – and then, stick to it. No matter what.
4) Take Out the Trash When You Leave
Don’t let the garbage sit around all day – simply take it out when you leave each morning, or whenever you walk out to your car.
Getting into the habit of taking out the trash and recycling every day when you leave the house will prevent garbage pileup and keep things smelling fresh.
5) Clean Your Toilet & Spray Your Shower With Cleaner At Night
As you’re going through your nightly bathroom routine, take a couple extra minutes to clean your toilet and spray your shower with cleaner. Use a wipe to clean off the toilet seat, as well. Taking the time to do so will keep your toilet neat, in between deep cleaning sessions.
6) Rehang Clothing That You Wore at the End of the Day
This is another one of those habit-building tasks that takes no more than a couple minutes – yet many of us don’t do it. Resist the urge to toss your clothes around your bedroom! Hang it back up in the closet or put it in the hamper.
This is the one room of your home that tends to get neglected the most, but it’s also the most important room (nothing’s more important than sleep!) Your bedroom should feel a cozy, comfy palace, and rehanging your clothing at the end of the day will help with this. Bonus points if you also make an effort to NEVER let unfolded laundry into your bedroom.
7) Brush Your Pets at Least Once Every Other Day
If you have a dog, a cat, or multiple pets, we can’t stress this tip enough. Brushing your pets at least once every other day will prevent hair from piling up in every corner of your house. This will not only will save you a serious amount of vacuuming time, but also limit the amount of dander or other allergens that your furry friends may bring into the house.
8) Clean Your Counters & Wipe Down Surfaces Daily
There’s nothing a pristine countertop to make your home feel neat and orderly. Wipe down your coffee table while you’re catching a show on Netflix, clean the surfaces in your bathroom as you’re getting ready in the morning, and wipe your counters and stovetop before you go to bed each night.
Trust us, it’ll feel amazing to wake up and start the day with sparkling clean surfaces!
9) Empty / Fill Dishwasher While Waiting For Your Coffee to Brew
Emptying and loading the dishwasher is a pain for every homeowner. We put it off, until they pile up and the sink.
Save some serious time by chipping away at this task while you’re brewing coffee, waiting on toast, or doing any other breakfast task. You’re sitting around waiting, so why not do something productive?
This way, your dishes won’t pile up and sit in the sink all day. And you won’t have to do the dishes at the end of your work day, when you least feel it.
10) Clean As You Cook
This little tip may seem super simple, but it can be truly life-changing. When you’re cooking dinner, try your best to clean up as you cook.
Put clean dishes away while the pasta water’s boiling, wash pots and pans as soon as you’re done using them, and clean any of your prep work before sitting down to eat. This makes for super easy cleanup!
Keep in mind, too, that you should swap out your dish towel(s) every couple of days to prevent contamination. (And don’t even get us started on that dirty sponge.)

Mistakes That Make Cleaning Take Longer – Clean Your House Fast
We're in the business of cleaning well, but we also want you to get chores the way as quickly as possible. And if you're committing these common cleaning mistakes, you just might be scrubbing up sun up to sun down.
1. You don't follow the “top to bottom” rule.
If vacuuming is your least favorite chore, it can be tempting to get it the way first. But if dusting the top shelf (or cleaning the ceiling fan) is your last task for the day, dirt will ly fall over your freshly vacuumed carpeting. And then you have do that annoying part all over again.
2. You don't sort laundry when it really counts.
Every now and then, you might skip sorting by color to hurry laundry day along (some moms even find that doing laundry “by person” saves a ton of sorting time — especially when all of your kids' clothes are similar hues and fabrics). But pre-sorting is often actually a time-saver in the end.
“Don't forget to separate lint givers from lint catchers, towels from knits or corduroy,” says Carolyn Forte, director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. “If you wash them together, you'll spend time trying to rid the fuzzy fabrics of lint.”
3. You tackle windows on a sunny day.
The nice, warm sun might actually inhibit your efforts, since the heat could cause your cleaner to dry before you can wipe it away. That means streaks — and then you'll just have to start over.
4. You don't turn off your vacuum's brush roller when you switch to wood or tile floor.
“If you're vacuuming bare floors with an upright vacuum, be sure to turn off the rotating brush,” says Forte. “Leave it on, and you'll scatter dust and dirt instead of picking it all up.”
5. You wash dishes at the sink before you put them in the dishwasher.
Yes, you should scrape any food scraps into the garbage, but don't bother hand-washing or even rinsing your dishes before you they go in the dishwasher. Research shows that it doesn't get your dishes any cleaner, and our experts agree.
“Prewashing dishes is a waste of time and energy,” says Forte. “Simply load them in the dishwasher, and if you aren't running it right away, let the dishwasher rinse them with a 'rinse only' cycle.”
6. You don't let tile cleaner sit for a few minutes before you start scrubbing.
“Give spray tub and tile cleaners a few minutes to work before wiping them away, “says Forte. “Letting them sit helps soften and dissolve soap scum and stains, so less scrubbing is required.” And less elbow grease means less time (and a not-so-sore arm the next day).
7. Your family doesn't remove shoes at the door.
The dirt you track in from outside can really build up over time, so beat it at its own game by going shoeless inside. And while you're at it, double up on doormats (one inside and one outside). They grab dirt before it can reach your new cream carpeting.
8. You use a lint roller to clean up pet hair.
If you're staring down a particularly fur covered couch, you might instinctively reach for this sticky paper. But a lint roller, while handy, isn't really up to heavy-duty jobs. When you need to clear a ton of pet hair at once, reach for a damp rubber glove instead to efficiently whisk the fuzz away.
9. You forget that your cleaners need cleaning, too.
“Dirty cloths, mops, and full vacuum cleaner bags don't pick up or remove dirt,” says Forte. “You'll just be working harder and longer with no results to show for it. Clean or replace your cleaning tools as needed.”
