One of the most frustrating things about furniture (aside from said furniture shopping) is the delivery and installation. There are extra charges and 10-hour delivery windows that come and go — it just seems an old-school way of doing things.

When my husband and I were looking to replace our 5-year-old faux leather couch that was showing signs of wear, we decided to shop online and only at places that offered free delivery and had modular styles that we could put together ourselves. Ikea, but more adult.

I've known about furniture startup Burrow for a few years but never had a reason to look at it much since we had a couch. Around the same time that we were looking to replace ours, Burrow launched a full-grain leather version of its popular Nomad couch so we decided to test it.

We chose the Nomad Leather King Sectional, a full-grain leather couch that would last years, if not, decades. We added a chaise and ottoman, all in black leather with walnut legs. The total cost was $3,790 — definitely not cheap or affordable by any means, but reasonable given the number of pieces we ordered and durability of full-grain leather.

Since I tested the couch more than 10 months ago, Burrow has added new leather colors, and styles to the armrests, legs, and pillows to the Nomad full-grain leather collection.

There's now a warm tan Camel leather option in addition to Black and Slate, a new block arm style, and round bolster pillows that match the three leather shades.

There are also three new leg options (Black, Brass, and Chrome) and lumbar pillows that match the five current fabric colorways.

Ten months in, there's still not a scratch, tear, or ripped seam to be found. And we've had young kids and dogs on it too.

Our new Burrow couch arrived in clearly labeled boxes and installation was tricky but manageable; it took about an hour

Each piece of the couch arrived in a labeled box so we didn't have to open each one to find the part we needed. Jada Wong / Business Insider

The couch arrived a few days after ordering, and in several clearly labeled boxes. That was helpful as we unpacked boxes in the order of installation — seats first, then the side panels with low armrests, and finally, the legs. The chaise includes a long cushion that lays on top of a base and any seat you want, and the ottoman, well, it's an ottoman.

Thee boxes also helpfully have holes for handles and easy carrying, and each item is wrapped in thick plastic so it doesn't get dirty during transit. We reused the plastic to carry our old couch to a local donation center.

The couch is a boxy modular design, so you can move the seats around however you want or even remove them to make your couch smaller, and the overall design and function of the couch will be the same.

Once we took out different parts of the couch to assemble, there was a big initial cardboard smell, especially on the right side. Thankfully, it's up against a wall and the smell has since dissipated.

Here are some of the specs of our king couch with the chaise and ottoman:

  • General Dimensions: 112 inches L x 36 inches W x 35 inches H
  • Seat Height: 17 inches
  • Arm Height: 23 inches
  • Seat Depth: 22 inches
  • Leg Height: 7 inches
  • Chaise Length: 61 inches
  • Ottoman General Dimensions: 26 inches L x 26 inches W x 17 inches H
  • Seat Height: 17 inches
  • Seat Depth: 26 inches
  • Leg Height: 7 inches

The couch has a modular design so you just lock and unlock the pieces of the couch to fit your space. Jada Wong / Business Insider

Instruction manuals are provided and easy to follow, so we didn't have any trouble there. You basically put two seats next to each other and secure with a metal latch between the seats and on the underside, then you move onto the other seats and armrests.

We had a lot of issues connecting the seats though because the metal latches between and under the seats were so hard to find and secure. One person would have to use their entire body weight to force the seats flush against each other while the other would fumble around with the latches.

It took about an hour to set up the couch because of the latch issues, but some reviewers said it took 15 to 20 minutes.

I'd imagine the latches were hard to deal with because the seats are well-padded and extend past their wooden frames, but if there's a way to make this process more efficient in the future, I'm all for it. If it weren't for the latches, I would imagine it'd take us much less time too.

The couch has a wooden frame covered in full-grain leather, but the underside is covered in thin fabric and secured with staples that are surprisingly cheap for such an expensive piece of furniture

For a couch that costs nearly $4,000, I expected better quality than staples and paper-thin backing. Jada Wong / Business Insider

The general frame of the couch is made with Baltic Birch, a type of light-colored wood that resists warping. So far, I haven't had any issues with the seats bending in the nine months we've had the couch.

But the underside is covered in thin black fabric secured via staples that are unexpectedly cheap for a $3,000-plus couch. During installation, I accidentally ripped through the fabric as I was securing one of the latches and I noticed that one of the staples is just a little too close to the edge and is exposed when looking at the couch straight on.

Thankfully, both issues are on the underside of the couch so you don't see anything. These are things I wouldn't expect from a couch that costs so much and especially when it's made with full-grain leather, but I guess there are bigger issues to have.

The Burrow couch has held up well in the past nine months we've had it — the frame is sturdy and the leather hasn't ripped

After using the Burrow Nomad couch for nine months, it hasn't lost its shape and the leather still looks great. Jada Wong / Business Insider

Despite doubling as a trampoline for two kids and a bed for a dog (sadly, neither are ours), the couch still looks great and the frame hasn't warped or bent anywhere. It's really sturdy and doesn't shift or squeak.

My husband has had a full-grain leather wallet for the past five years, so if that's any indication of quality, our couch will last a long time. Full-grain leather is the highest quality of leather and ages well; it'll develop a slightly glossy patina with variations in color.

I was personally worried about the feel and that it would get sticky and gross during the summer, but it was actually quite cool even after sitting on it for hours watching “Veronica Mars.”

The seat cushions were initially too padded for my liking, but it has squished down slightly. I guess that's a good problem to have though since that means the seats are well-padded and comfortable. There's a strip of fabric on the edge of the cushion so it doesn't slide down the seat, a thoughtful design detail that goes a long way.

The couch also has a built-in USB charger which is tech-y and helpful, especially for guests crashing on our couch.

If you have the budget, I'd suggest taking a look at Burrow's full-grain Nomad couches for their durability, ease of set up, and customizable modular design

Couches aren't cheap in general, but given the quality of Burrow's full-grain leather, I'd recommend the investment.

Similar to a bed, you're sitting on it for hours every day so you should prioritize quality and durability if you can.

We have a full set (four-seater couch with a chaise and ottoman) so ours was expensive. But depending on the size you need, it can be a lot cheaper.

This is Burrow's first leather couch so there are definitely certain things that can be improved down the road such as the fabric for the underside of the seats and the use of staples, but ultimately, these are small issues that didn't impact quality or integrity. We're already seeing additions new leather colors, armrest styles, and pillows to the collection so hopefully, there are updates to the underside fabric and construction as well.

Burrow Couch Review – The Best Couch to Buy Online

The Affordable New Leather Sofa From Burrow

Burrow

In a classic scene that aired nearly two decades ago, Friends perfectly captured the futility of moving a big couch into a tiny apartment building.

After volunteering to help Ross lug his gargantuan sofa up a narrow stairwell, Chandler and Rachel find themselves stuck, unable to pivot free.

Ultimately, they're left with no choice but to saw their way out, leaving poor Ross's couch in ruins.

Twenty years later, that episode remains disappointingly relevant: The problem of moving bulky furniture into tiny spaces continues to haunt people—namely, New Yorkers me who live in cramped, constricted apartment buildings.

A growing number of online-only retailers, however, think they've finally found a way to help city dwellers avoid Ross, Rachel, and Chandler's fate.

Similar to how manufacturers Casper and Leesa invented a relatively pain-free way to ship high-quality mattresses, companies Campaign, Article, and Benchmade have sprung up in recent years to help simplify the process of buying—and transporting—couches and chairs.

Burrow, which bills itself as the “luxury couch for real life,” is one of the newest and fastest-growing entrants into this burgeoning retail category. most of its competitors, Burrow ships its couches modularly, which means you snap the sections together Lego-style upon delivery.

In exchange for a little bit of manual labor on the backend, in other words, you get the peace of mind that you won't wind up trapped and shouting for a saw.

An added bonus is that you can shrink or expand your couch at will: If it turns out you only have space for a love seat, you can just unclip the middle cushion and snap the ends together; it's refreshingly versatile.

The couch that Burrow refers to in its tagline is a classic, mid-century modern-style sofa that comes in a wide range of fabric color swatches (white, burgundy, navy, gravel, and charcoal) and leg finishes (ebony, walnut, and oak).

It's relatively budget-friendly—the average three-seater starts around $1,400, but it's not difficult to find codes that will knock 15 or even 20 percent off the sticker price, putting it in line with comparable options from major retailers IKEA and Wayfair.

Having just rid myself of two enormous, brown leather behemoths from Bob's Discount Furniture that had been fixtures of my apartment for the better part of six years, I was in the market for something that felt more versatile and mature. That led me to Burrow, which, full disclosure, let me try one of its couches gratis.

Scanning their inventory, I settled on a dark navy blue sectional with a long chaise cushion.

Burrow prominently advertises free, seven-day shipping to most of the US—and as promised, the couch arrived less than a week later in six large, lightweight, clearly marked boxes that I was able to move up the stairs and into my apartment one by one without much trouble.

Once unpacked, the process of assembling the sofa was even simpler: Since all the hardware is built-in, you won't find a mess of nuts, dowels, and allen wrenches that typical big box retailers often force people to fuss around with.

Instead, you're met with sturdy, built-in clips that snap together with minimal effort. The legs simply twist into place with a couple of screws, and the top cushions slide together and lock in using a built-in lever mechanism.

With a little help from my girlfriend, we had the couch fully assembled in about 30 minutes. If this is this the future of buying and assembling furniture, I'm all in.

Burrow

I was also pleased to find some thoughtful and—let's face it—millennial-friendly touches included, such as a built-in USB charger located next to one of the arms.

Still, there were times when the budget-friendliness of Burrow's signature sofa was more apparent than I would've d.

For instance, those connecting pieces had a frustrating tendency to slide place when jostled, which meant pausing to push the sections back together and lock the built-in dowels between the cushions back together.

And while the cushions were impressively soft and springy—holding their ground when a friend who is built a linebacker came to visit one weekend—the arms felt rigid and borderline uncomfortable.

If you're planning to doze off on a lazy Sunday, you'll almost certainly need a good pillow. The chaise cushion, meanwhile, sits on a small, free-floating base that attaches to the couch using only two strips of velcro.

The setup works and isn't immediately obvious, but it also doesn't exactly scream “premium.”

Still, for those accustomed to dealing with modest budgets and even more modest living spaces, Burrow's couches qualify as a game-changer, especially if you're someone who tends to move frequently. Simple and stylish, they're an affordable way to elevate any living room—without the worry of getting stuck along the way.

Finally, an Affordable Couch That’s Guaranteed to Fit Through Your Front Door

The Affordable New Leather Sofa From Burrow

Burrow’s modular sofas start at $1,395, and won’t leave you staring blankly at an instruction manual.

If the ubiquity of “couch doctors” in every metropolitan area is any indication, fitting a new couch through an apartment door is a universal challenge. But before we call chopping a couch in half and Frankenstein-ing it back together as an urban rite of passage, let’s review our options. Among our favorite affordable couches, Burrow stands out as a shining solution to moving woes.

I turned to Burrow, a direct-to-consumer startup based in New York, after a couple failed attempts at getting a couch through the frighteningly small door to my apartment. Burrow’s modular furniture fit my price range and size requirements—and when it arrived, I was able to assemble it myself without ever even opening the instruction manual.

Burrow's New York City showroom.

Burrow offers five fabrics, two leathers, and three wood finishes so the sofa can be custom-made to complement your home.

All sofas come with built-in USB chargers which quickly become hard to live without (and come in handy when you have an impromptu guest).

Beyond furniture, their product line also extends into affordable throws and pillows which, along with the sofas, are made in America and always non-toxic.

Starting at $1,395, the Nomad Sofa is the perfect option for new apartment owners and for those who can’t make it past the first page of an IKEA manual.
