Every great party needs tasty appetizers, right? I’m a firm believer in that statement, so skip the potato chips and try one of these four good-for-you appetizer recipes instead.

1. Fig and goat cheese appetizer

Whipping up this appetizer is so incredibly simple, and the taste payoff is huge.


  • 6 Made In Nature Calimyrna Figs or Black Mission Figs
  • ¼ cup of red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1.5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 4 ounces goat cheese (soft Brie cheese also works well)
  • 16 crackers
  • 16 pieces of fresh arugula or mixed mesclun greens

Add the oil and onion to a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Saute the onions until they begin to soften.

Trim the stems off your figs and slice them into 1/4″ slices (about 4-5 per fig).Add the figs and balsamic vinegar to your skillet. Saute for 2 – 4 minutes until the figs soften and are nicely coated with oil and vinegar. Remove from heat.Spread cheese on crackers so that they’re lightly covered.

Add one small piece of arugula or mixed green on top of the cheese. Place fig topping on greens and serve.

2. Melon, Mozzarella, and Prosciutto Skewers

Preparing this fresh, healthy appetizer takes basically no time.

Ingredients:2.5 cups cantaloupe or honeydew cubes½ pound thin sliced prosciutto1 8 ounce tub of fresh small mozzarella cheese balls20 (4-inch) wooden skewers


Place 1 melon cube, 1 prosciutto slice, and 1 mozzarella ball onto each wooden skewer. Sprinkle with pepper.

3. Goat cheese and fig “deviled eggs”

This special spin on the traditional deviled egg is incredible. Your guests won’t be able to get enough!

Ingredients:12 large hard-boiled eggs, peeled8 ounces goat cheese, melted¼ cup Made In Nature Black Mission Figs, diced½ teaspoon rosemary

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions:Slice your hard-boiled eggs in half and remove yolks.Combine yolks, goat cheese, figs, rosemary, and lemon juice in a bowl and mix.

Use a teaspoon to spoon the egg yolk mixture into the egg whites. Serve cold.

4. Warm mixed nuts

The three recipes I’ve shared are all easy to make, but if you’re really short on time, this “recipe” can’t be beat: warm mixed nuts. If you’re feeling extra adventurous throw in some coconut chips.

Made in Nature Nut Blend (try pomegranate ginger fusion, or any of the other varieties)

Directions:Preheat your oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.Spread the nut blend onto your baking sheet.

Bake until nice and warm, approximately 5 to 8 minutes.

I to serve mine with pomegranate arils, but a dollop of cranberry sauce or cherry jam would be a great choice too.

Almond Cheese with Herbs de Provence

Make vegan cheese for your plant-based friends! Almonds, lemon juice, and a bit of nutritional yeast make a delicious spreadable savory cheese that will disappear in minutes. This recipe is on page 73 of Love & Lemons Every Day.


Burrata served with seasonal produce and toasted baguette is one of my favorite easy appetizers. The heirloom tomato variation pictured below is delicious in the summer, but at this time of year, I love to plate it with juicy pear slices, pomegranate arils, and fresh thyme. Add a sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a drizzle of lemon-thyme oil to take it over the top!

Green Harissa Grilled Cheese

What’s cuter than a mini grilled cheese sandwich party appetizer? I make mine with spinach and an herbaceous green harissa for an elevated twist.

Mix & Match Quesadillas

Who doesn’t love quesadillas? Make a big batch before your guests arrive, or set out a DIY quesadilla bar with tortillas, fresh veggies, salsa, cheese, and refried beans. Then, cook quesadillas to order!

  • 1 heaping cup roasted butternut squash
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1½ cups cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon coriander
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne, less if sensitive to spice
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
  • ¼ cup water, or as needed
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • pomegranate arils, feta, parsley, and microgreens, for topping
  • pita, crackers and/or veggies, for serving
  • In a food processor, combine the roasted squash, garlic, chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, cumin, coriander, cayenne, and sea salt.
  • With the blade running, drizzle in the olive oil. Add water, as need, to blend to a smooth consistency. Taste and adjust seasonings. (Note: this is a bit spicy before you add the olive oil – the olive oil tones down the spice.)
  • Scoop the hummus into a serving bowl and top with pomegranate arils, feta, parsley, microgreens, and a drizzle of olive oil. Serve with toasted pita, crackers, and/or chopped veggies.

Here's a quick guide to how many appetizers you should serve at your party:

  • 10-12 guests = 5 appetizer selections
  • 25 guests = 9 appetizer selections

The Party Planning Timeline

You want to relax and enjoy the party, too. So set your appetizer menu, and then develop a schedule for shopping for and preparing the appetizers. 

Two weeks to a month before the party:

  • Create a complete shopping list, sorting the list by when you can purchase items (perishables closer to party time).
  • Shop for items with a long shelf life — wine, soft drinks, crackers, nuts, and hard cheeses.

A week before the party:

  • Prepare any foods that can be made ahead and frozen. 
  • Finish any party decorations that can be created in advance.

A day or two before the party:

  • Prepare any appetizers that can be stored in the refrigerator.
  • Pull out serving dishes and utensils.
  • Purchase flowers or other perishables.

The day of the party: 

  • Buy ice and chill beverages.
  • Finish last-minute appetizer recipes. 
  • Set the table.

Editor's Tip: Many party foods taste better when served around room temperature — not piping-hot or ice-cold. However, perishable appetizers should not stand at room temperature for longer than two hours. Switch out serving plates, or serve them in heated chafing dishes or bowls of ice to maintain appropriate temperatures.
