4 Healthy Appetizer Recipes For Your Next Dinner Party
Every great party needs tasty appetizers, right? I’m a firm believer in that statement, so skip the potato chips and try one of these four good-for-you appetizer recipes instead.
1. Fig and goat cheese appetizer
Whipping up this appetizer is so incredibly simple, and the taste payoff is huge.
- 6 Made In Nature Calimyrna Figs or Black Mission Figs
- ¼ cup of red onion, thinly sliced
- 1.5 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 4 ounces goat cheese (soft Brie cheese also works well)
- 16 crackers
- 16 pieces of fresh arugula or mixed mesclun greens
Add the oil and onion to a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Saute the onions until they begin to soften.
Trim the stems off your figs and slice them into 1/4″ slices (about 4-5 per fig).Add the figs and balsamic vinegar to your skillet. Saute for 2 – 4 minutes until the figs soften and are nicely coated with oil and vinegar. Remove from heat.Spread cheese on crackers so that they’re lightly covered.
Add one small piece of arugula or mixed green on top of the cheese. Place fig topping on greens and serve.
2. Melon, Mozzarella, and Prosciutto Skewers
Preparing this fresh, healthy appetizer takes basically no time.
Ingredients:2.5 cups cantaloupe or honeydew cubes½ pound thin sliced prosciutto1 8 ounce tub of fresh small mozzarella cheese balls20 (4-inch) wooden skewers
Place 1 melon cube, 1 prosciutto slice, and 1 mozzarella ball onto each wooden skewer. Sprinkle with pepper.
3. Goat cheese and fig “deviled eggs”
This special spin on the traditional deviled egg is incredible. Your guests won’t be able to get enough!
Ingredients:12 large hard-boiled eggs, peeled8 ounces goat cheese, melted¼ cup Made In Nature Black Mission Figs, diced½ teaspoon rosemary
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Directions:Slice your hard-boiled eggs in half and remove yolks.Combine yolks, goat cheese, figs, rosemary, and lemon juice in a bowl and mix.
Use a teaspoon to spoon the egg yolk mixture into the egg whites. Serve cold.
4. Warm mixed nuts
The three recipes I’ve shared are all easy to make, but if you’re really short on time, this “recipe” can’t be beat: warm mixed nuts. If you’re feeling extra adventurous throw in some coconut chips.
Made in Nature Nut Blend (try pomegranate ginger fusion, or any of the other varieties)
Directions:Preheat your oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.Spread the nut blend onto your baking sheet.
Bake until nice and warm, approximately 5 to 8 minutes.

Butternut Squash Hummus (pictured above)
One of my favorite holiday appetizer recipes! Sprinkled with feta, pomegranate seeds, and microgreens, it’s pretty, festive, and filled with spiced butternut flavor.
Spinach Artichoke Dip
My version of this classic spinach dip is every bit as creamy and delicious as the original, but you won’t find any cream cheese here. Instead, it gets its luscious texture from blended cauliflower and Greek yogurt!
Need I say more?
Serve this velvety, nutty dip with warm pita and a drizzle of olive oil, and it’ll disappear in no time.
Loaded Butternut Queso
This recipe is a fan favorite! Butternut squash blends into a cheesy queso dip that even the biggest cheese-lovers love. The recipe is on page 75 of Love & Lemons Every Day.
Vegan Seven Layer Dip

Cheesy Cauliflower Party Dip
No one will guess that an entire head of cauliflower is hiding inside this creamy dip! Topped with bubbly, melty cheese, it’s an addictive party favorite.

There’s no cheese in this recipe, but it tastes shockingly close to the real thing. Filled with flavorful ingredients Dijon mustard, jarred pimentos, and lemon, it’s tangy, rich, and delicious.
If you’re looking for fresh, light appetizer ideas, try tzatziki! It’s a cooling mix of Greek yogurt, cucumber, lemon, and dill that’s fantastic with pita or fresh veggies.
Everyone loves hummus, but if you ask me, baba ganoush deserves just as much love. Whenever I make it, I can’t resist eating this silky, smoky dip straight from the food processor!
Steamed kale adds an extra veggie punch to this super green guac.

This flatbread is gluten-free, but even your biggest bread-loving guests will fall for it. The chickpea base is spiked with falafel spices, and it’s piled high with crisp, juicy veggies, rich sauces, and fresh herbs.

There are tons of reasons to love these stuffed mushrooms. 1. They’re festive. Look at that red, white and green! 2. They’re delicious. And 3. They’re SUPER easy to make. Just stir together the filling, load it into cremini mushroom caps, and bake!
Healthier (Vegan) Stuffed Potato Skins
Creamy, tangy cashew sour cream and smoky coconut bacon make these crispy potato skins lighter (but no less delicious) than traditional ones.
Shiitake Maki Sushi
Vibrant carrot ginger dipping sauce is the perfect fresh complement for these savory sushi rolls. If you’ve never made homemade sushi before, don’t be intimated. It’s surprisingly easy to make, and your guests are bound to be impressed.
Avocado Summer Rolls
These gorgeous summer rolls have to be one of the prettiest appetizer ideas out there! This recipe calls for peaches, but when I make it in winter, I simply skip them, and the rolls still come out delicious.

Chipotle Cauliflower Nachos
Make this mouthwatering nacho platter with tortilla chips, black beans, diced tomato, cilantro, and big dollops of smoky, gooey cashew “queso.” Then, add a few spoonfuls of pineapple salsa for a surprising sweet finish!
Charred Cherry Tomatoes
Cumin seeds and mint infuse these cherry tomatoes with fresh, aromatic flavor. Topped onto a bed of lemony yogurt, they’re perfect for scooping up with slices of crusty bread.
Mix and Match Crostini Board
Sometimes, the best appetizer recipes are the simplest. Make a big platter with cheeses, seasonal jams and fruit, pesto, and nuts, and let guests load up crackers and baguette to their liking!
Easy Appetizers for Snacking
Sweet & Spicy Popcorn
This sweet & spicy popcorn is one of my go-to holiday appetizers. Seasoned with maple, cinnamon, and cayenne, it has a delectable mix of warm, sweet, and spicy flavors.
Skip the potato chips at your next party, and serve roasted chickpeas instead! They’re still salty, crunchy, and yummy, but they’re way more nutritious! For a fun variation, toss them with spices chili or curry powder.
Sweet Potato Fries
These crispy baked fries are a fun appetizer idea on their own, but if you pair them with a dipping sauce tahini sauce, cilantro lime dressing, or chipotle sauce (my favorite!), they’re guaranteed to be the hit of your next party!
Salsa Appetizer Recipes
It’s sweet, it’s spicy, it’s 7 ingredients. What’s not to love?
Tomatillo Salsa Verde
My tried-and-true salsa recipe! It’s zesty, tangy, spicy, and so, so good.

Kiwi Avocado Salsa Verde
Creamy chunks of avocado contrast deliciously with juicy kiwi and crisp veggies in this sweet & spicy dip.
Cheesy Appetizer Recipes
As far as easy appetizers go, this baked brie has to take the cake! Transfer the cheese straight from the fridge to the oven, bake for 8 minutes, and pile it high with your favorite seasonal toppings. I to serve mine with pomegranate arils, but a dollop of cranberry sauce or cherry jam would be a great choice too.
Almond Cheese with Herbs de Provence
Make vegan cheese for your plant-based friends! Almonds, lemon juice, and a bit of nutritional yeast make a delicious spreadable savory cheese that will disappear in minutes. This recipe is on page 73 of Love & Lemons Every Day.
Burrata served with seasonal produce and toasted baguette is one of my favorite easy appetizers. The heirloom tomato variation pictured below is delicious in the summer, but at this time of year, I love to plate it with juicy pear slices, pomegranate arils, and fresh thyme. Add a sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a drizzle of lemon-thyme oil to take it over the top!
Green Harissa Grilled Cheese
What’s cuter than a mini grilled cheese sandwich party appetizer? I make mine with spinach and an herbaceous green harissa for an elevated twist.
Mix & Match Quesadillas
Who doesn’t love quesadillas? Make a big batch before your guests arrive, or set out a DIY quesadilla bar with tortillas, fresh veggies, salsa, cheese, and refried beans. Then, cook quesadillas to order!
Quinoa & Kale Quesadillas
Kale and quinoa may be unconventional quesadilla fillings, but they make these guys totally delicious. They’re crisp on the outside, gooey in the middle, and packed with zesty flavor.
Do you have any quick and easy appetizer ideas you’d love to see a recipe for? I’m wanting to try a jackfruit buffalo “chicken” dip, lightened-up jalapeño poppers, cauliflower “chicken wings,” or Greek yogurt deviled eggs next!

Easy Appetizer Ideas
To guarantee a diverse appetizer spread, serve a combination of easy appetizers that satisfy several of the following food categories:
- Garden: Typically healthy appetizers made with fruit or vegetables — raw, cooked, or stuffed.
- Starch: Hearty, starchy appetizer recipes, such as finger sandwiches, pizza, and dumplings, are all part of this family. Bruschetta, breadsticks, crackers, and rolls are also mainstays. Cheesy appetizers pair nicely with this category.
- Protein: Serve meat or fish dishes, such as meatballs, chicken wings, or sushi, to give your guests protein. You could also make an egg, cheese, or tofu appetizer. Try these grilled appetizer recipes.
- Snacks: Easy appetizers to prepare, the snack category includes nuts, chips, pretzels, popcorn, and other mostly savory finger foods. Check out our favorite easy party snacks.
- Dips and Spreads: Pair foods from various appetizer categories with tapenades, relishes, and other party dips and spreads.
- Desserts: No dinner would be complete without dessert! Some sweet party appetizer ideas are cookies, slivers of cake, candies, and chocolates. Get our free bite-size desserts cookbook!
Editor's Tip: If your guests have dietary restrictions, consider making an assortment of appetizer recipes that cater to their needs. Having vegetarian appetizers or gluten-free appetizers, for instance, might be a priority if you are inviting vegetarians or people with gluten sensitivities.
How Many Appetizers Should You Serve?
The number of party appetizers you serve depends on the number of guests you invite. As your guest list increases, so should the appetizer selections.
Here's a quick guide to how many appetizers you should serve at your party:
- 10-12 guests = 5 appetizer selections
- 25 guests = 9 appetizer selections
- 50 guests = 13 appetizer selections
For more party planning help, check out our Free Appetizer Quantity Guide. If you're still worried about running food, keep easy appetizers that don't require preparation — such as cured meats, cheeses, and chips or crackers — in the refrigerator or pantry.
The Party Planning Timeline
You want to relax and enjoy the party, too. So set your appetizer menu, and then develop a schedule for shopping for and preparing the appetizers.
Two weeks to a month before the party:
- Create a complete shopping list, sorting the list by when you can purchase items (perishables closer to party time).
- Shop for items with a long shelf life — wine, soft drinks, crackers, nuts, and hard cheeses.
A week before the party:
- Prepare any foods that can be made ahead and frozen.
- Finish any party decorations that can be created in advance.
A day or two before the party:
- Prepare any appetizers that can be stored in the refrigerator.
- Pull out serving dishes and utensils.
- Purchase flowers or other perishables.
The day of the party:
- Buy ice and chill beverages.
- Finish last-minute appetizer recipes.
- Set the table.
Editor's Tip: Many party foods taste better when served around room temperature — not piping-hot or ice-cold. However, perishable appetizers should not stand at room temperature for longer than two hours. Switch out serving plates, or serve them in heated chafing dishes or bowls of ice to maintain appropriate temperatures.
